MUTUAL Design Framework

Designing applications on the decentralized web can be complex, both on the protocol level and UI/UX level. It requires balancing the technical intricacies of the technology with accessibility for a broader audience. We envision the MUTUAL Framework to become a resource for developers and designers building with these technologies.

This new, emerging internet allows users to engage with new interfaces that challenge design patterns from traditional web design. While building products with this technology over the past two years, we’ve observed many gaps surrounding the development of standards + best practices for design patterns that repeat throughout these interfaces. We’ve started collecting these patterns and digesting them into a framework where they are researched, tested, designed, and packaged into code for the larger community to utilize. The MUTUAL Framework considers the user’s experience from the protocol level up to UI/UX in interface design in order to start a database of considered best practices.

In addition to addressing the broken patterns that currently exist, we are looking to the future as well. Protocol design in the decentralized web will continue to scale, and so will the number of new design patterns that need to be considered for users. Run by volunteers, we are interested in aligning with the larger community to reach consensus on the initiatives we begin, in response to gaps we find. (to be continued)

<aside> πŸ”‘ Current status of the framework : In progress is a foundational visual design system akin to Tailwind, but with bespoke patterns for high-level interactions common to decentralized applications. We consider this to be an approach at the atomic level. The next level (which we are scoping) includes more complex, molecular patterns that emerge with typical smart contract interactions.

Active Initiatives

We're currently having conversations, writing research papers, and ideating on a multi-layered database we're calling the MUTUAL Framework. If you feel passionate about these ideas and are interested in contributing, send in a query <3.
